Défanse
La Défense is one of the most significant achievements of the late 19th Century. It is a grand platform which extends from Neuilly Bridge to the Great Arch and a true icon of the area, containing a myriad of skyscrapers, fountains, sculptures and the offices of 1600 companies. The Great Arch acts appropriately as the triumphant climax of a triumphant axis, a mega structure of hollow cube with lifts: it extends 110m in height, 112m in width and 108m in depth.
The Roussel-Hoechst Tower was one of the first to be constructed at La Defense in 1966-67, however its elegance has been retained intact. Its central body is of reinforced cement with a metallic frame covered by glass.
The CNIT is a splendid building with a white dome constructed between 1957 and 1959. Les 4 Temps is the largest shopping centre in Europe and has the special feature that all its streets and squares are illuminated by direct natural light.
To reach La Défense you can take either metro line 1 or RER line A.
