Monmartre and Sacre Coeur


Monmartre makes up one of the villages which came to be annexed into Paris in 1860. It is certainly one of the city's most distinctive and intriguing districts, particularly noted for its bohemian image. The greatest artists of the 1800s chose it as a place to live and work in; it has the dimensions of a small village with little streets coming back up the hill to the Church of the Sacred Heart. The Place du Tertre, with a splendid view over the white domes of the church, is delightful though a bit crowded with artists trying to make portraits of tourists. All around the square there are restaurants, small shops, cafes and artist studios.montmatre
Rue Lepic is one of the most distinctive streets for arriving in Monmartre: it is full of small shops and little restaurants and provides enjoyable glimpses of the city as one goes up. Close to Rue Lepic there is the Moulin de la Galette, immortalised in a very famous painting by Renoir.
The Church of the Sacred-Heart dominates the city, built with chalky stone from Chateau-Landon which lends it a somewhat innocent air. Its domes are elongated and narrow at the base from units placed one on top of the other. This church was conceived as a place of pilgrimage, which explains the presence of the extremely spacious churchyard and staircase. It remains a hybrid from a stylistic point of view but is certainly one of the city's icons.

To reach Monmartre:
Metro: line 12 Jules Joffrin or Abesses stop if you want to take the funicular railway. There is a staircase running alongside the funicular railway which offers a very evocative alternative for those wishing to proceed on foot.
Line 2 Anvers or Pialle stop for those who want to climb the hill on foot.
Bus: line 30, 31, 54, 80, 85, Monmartrobus

If you do not feel like climbing up Montmartre hill on foot, you can take the funicular railway which carries you into the heart of the district.  From there, continue on foot.
