Musèe d'Orsay

This splendid museum was derived from the restructuring of Orsay gare (station) when it was about to be destroyed. Architect Gae Aulenti executed the project, conceiving an interior design in harmony with the former station's palatial nature. Two levels were built in the upper section to create enough space for housing the complete collection of works.
The museum keeps works from the early Eighteenth Century to the 1930s, incorporating streams such as Realism, Impressionism and Art Nouveau.
Sculptures and paintings from the 1800s until the early Impressionist period are exhibited on the ground floor; the upper level exhibits all stages of Impressionism, from “Breakfast on the grass” (1863) by Manet to the pastels of Degas and Toulouse-Lautrec. Also by Degas there is the “Little Ballerina” (1830) bronze sculpture, one of the artist's favourite subjects. There are numerous paintings by Van Gogh, with "Self-portrait" (1889) ranking among the most famous. Cézanne also features with “Card players” (1895) amongst others, along with Gauguin's portraits of Polynesian people and landscapes.
Paintings and bronze sculptures in various styles are exhibited on the intermediate level, covering styles as diverse as Naturalism, Realism, Symbolism and Art Nouveau.monet
