Tour Eiffel
The Quartier des Invalides is considered one of the city's most exclusive areas: it brings to mind its military origins in all aspects, from its broad streets to the uniformity of its urban fabric. If one takes a walk designed to end up at the Eiffel Tower, the following sights may be admired along the way: the Hotel des Invalides constructed in 1671 as a military hospital to welcome officials and soldiers who were no longer fit to serve in the army; the Ecole Militaire, a military college; the Champ de Mars (military parade ground), a garden linking the most enjoyable and visited locations of the city, a place which at the end of the 1800s became a theatre for the Great Exhibitions. In order to celebrate the centenary of the Revolution, Paris organised the biggest exhibition ever held. The two pivotal points were occupied by the Galerie des Machines at one end and the EiffelTower at the other, in alignment with the bridge connecting to the Trocadéro.
The tower was constructed in just 25 months. After an initially lukewarm reaction from the general public it very soon became an iconic symbol of the city, despite the fact that it was supposed to disappear after 20 years (like all works created for the Exhibition). It instead successfully won the right to remain, becoming first a meteorological station and then a radio station: 300.65m high and organised on three levels, it provides mind-blowing panoramic views from its summit.

From 1st January to 15th June: lift 9.30-23.45 with last ascent at 23.00 and 22.30 for the top floor; stairs from 9.30-18.30, last access at 18.00.
From 16th June to 2nd September: lift 9.00-0.45, with last ascent at 0.00 and 23.00 for the top floor; stairs from 9.00-0.30, last access at 0.00.
From 3rd September to 31st December: lift 9.30-23.45, with last ascent at 23.00 and 22.30 for the top floor; stairs from 9.30-18.30, last access at 18.00.
The cost of the lift varies and depends on the floor you wish to arrive on:
1st floor: 4.20 Euros
2nd floor: 7.70 Euros
3rd floor: 11 Euros
If you want to climb on foot you only need to arrive on the 2nd floor and the price of the ticket is 3.80 Euros.
